David: Not the Hero We're Looking For
In our "Twisted Scripture" series, we are looking at commonly misinterpreted parts of the Bible. This week, we look at the accounts of David where we will discover that he might not be the best role model or hero we should be looking for - rather another flawed person who points to the need for Jesus.

Good morning. Welcome. If you're new here among us, my name is Jean. And today, I'll be ruining your preconceived notions about the Bible. I did to try and alternate opening and that was the best I could come up with. So today, we're going to look at the accounts of David, King David in the Bible. And so that's why I prefaced it like that. So you're going to learn some things that maybe you haven't heard about David before. So I'm going to begin. So did you know that David was considered the greatest babysitter in the Bible? Because he rocked Goliath asleep. That is funny if somebody Thank you. Yeah. And Goliath though, he was surprised, right when he got hit with the rock, because the thought had never entered his head before. It can get worse. So I'll stop. I'll try not to lose my head. Anyway. Don't encourage me because it'll just keep going. Alright. So in our series is twisted scriptures here, we're looking at parts of the Bible, don't look at or they don't look at in full right. So the rest of the story, we looked at the whole Bible. So now we're just going to go back. And we're going to look at some of those verses that people either misinterpret, misuse or take out of context. So we're going to look at the accounts of David today. And we're going to see that maybe he's not exactly the ideal role model for us. Just another flawed person who needs Jesus, right. So one thing that's necessary to kind of explain here is I'm going through we have some people, if you follow along in the Bible, you have a Bible with you, you might know this, a lot of people don't. And there's going to be a quick lesson this morning in. Like, it's just so important to read the whole Bible, before making a conclusion. It's so important that so here where we're going to be is we're going to be in first and second Samuel. Dip into first Kings just a little bit. And your Bible, how did we get here? Well, Ruth, alright, so you have Joshua, Judges, Ruth, right. So beginning this section, this history section. And in here you have the judges. And so there's a point to be made here. If you're paying attention, then there's Ruth, and Ruth basically, story of redemption. But that gets us to David, that's going to get us to David. Because you see, at the end of it, there's like a genealogy of David. And then we go into First Samuel. And so you have Ely sets up Samuel. And then Samuel is the both he's both a prophet and a judge for Israel. And then he's going to end up annoying thing, David. So that's what you have going on here. So it kind of goes into linear fashion. But if you go back to judges, you kind of get what's going on, right? So well, people did whatever was right in their own eyes. And that time or that day, there was no king. That's not necessarily a good thing, right? So what you have here, and you have to understand this, the setup here is that from the beginning of the Bible, the real problem is, is God isn't good enough. And we have to boil it down to something God's not good. And we want to be like God, right? So right from the garden, you have this constant problem. And so fine, you're like Moses, the mediator for us and the law, like that's not good enough, you know, so then you get judged, we're going to give you judges. No, that's not good enough. And so you get to this point here, where they're like, We want to King we want to be like other nations, right? So nothing's good enough. So they're so far removed from God at this point, right? So the king was not the ideal. God was supposed to be good enough. So anyway, when you're looking at this, we get to First Samuel, a lot of people don't realize is that you get First and Second Samuel First and Second Kings, then you get First and Second Chronicles. And in a very broad brush way, it's basically like an overview of a lot of it. Now, people will eventually figure that out, if they get through nine chapters of genealogies first. They go away, this is the David account. Again, here we are back there right. Now a lot of people at that point will dismiss it. And I'm going to encourage you not to and we're going to see today why you should not do that. Because you really miss every really important point that's not in the rest of it. So that's what we're doing here. So if you're following along, you get a little bit of an overlap going on here, but I'm going to kind of walk you through it a little bit. So here we go. We want to King and it's really bad. So now you have a backup a little bit. You have Samuel, the people are asking for a king. And essentially like just I'm going to paraphrase a bit here. He's kind of upset. You know what a king is going to do to you though and He may feel rejected. They're so gods like, look, they're not rejecting you, Samuel, they're rejecting me. Because remember, he's a judge and a prophet. And we had the judges, right. So the judges weren't good enough. We want to kick right. So that's what you get here. So what happens is long story short, they choose Saul. So the first game is pretty interesting because he's like a head taller. Remember that? He's a head taller than everyone else. He's like, what you'd be looking for in a character is tall, big guy, right? Good stature, and that's what they get. But Saul loses his kingship, again, kind of boiling it down for you guys. He's disobedient at least twice. He doesn't wait for Samuel to come and do the sacrifice. And then when it comes time to conquer the and allocates they gave like Moses and crew and Joshua, they gave those guys trouble and Exodus and now you're going to wipe out the Amalekites. Everybody know. So I'll keep some of like the nice livestock and spoils for himself and leaves the king alive. For these things. He loses the kingship, it's literally and figuratively torn away from him. It's a pair, piece of the robe tears and so far away from him. But what you're going to get is like a cutscene here. So he's still king, though. So it's still technically King. Just spiritually. There's a setup here with David. So First Samuel 16 One. Now the Lord said to Samuel, you have mourned long enough for Saul, I have rejected Him as King of Israel. So fill your class with olive oil and go to Bethlehem. Find a man named Jesse who lives there, for I selected one of his sons to be my king. But Samuel is going to do that. If saw hears about it, you'll kill me. You can have her with you. The Lord replied, and say that you've come to make a sacrifice to the Lord, invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you which one of his sons to anoint for me. So Samuel did as the Lord instructed, when he arrived at Bethlehem, the elders of the town came trembling and to meet him. What's wrong? They asked, you come in peace. Yes, Samuel replied, I've come to sacrifice to the Lord here by yourself and come with me to the sacrifice. Then Samuel perform the purification, right for Jesse and his sons were invited, and invited them to the sacrifice to so here's your setup. So
David's brothers, First Samuel 16, six, when they arrived, Samuel took one look alive and thought, surely, this is the North Lord's anointed. But the Lord said to Samuel, don't judge by his appearance or height for I have rejected Him. The Lord doesn't see things the way you see them. People judged by outward appearance. And I just, if you're new here, and you don't know me, I like to use an NLT just because everybody understands it, regardless of reading level. But when it kind of deviates a little bit from like the main language, this is what I put in there. So there's your literal thing there sees as far as the eyes, right? But the Lord sees as far as the heart. So good translation, but the Lord looks at the hearts. That's important. Remember, those verses carry them with you as we go through. So to summarize for you guys have been at AB shimmy. Next two brothers in line, they get rejected to Jessie, do you have any other songs? Yeah, there's one he's in the field. That's David Wright taking care of the sheep and doing stuff well get him we're not going to do anything else or eat or anything until David, the younger one comes and so kind of a funny thing. He's dark and handsome. He's a ruddy young man with beautiful eyes, right? So he's handsome, that's weird. But the Lord says, Samuel, this is the one anoint him. Alright, so he gets anointed. And the all of us if you don't understand this, too, can seem kind of weird. Like the reason he pours olive oil on his head. Yet, so if I'm cooking, I'm not going to do that to you. But. But it's the thing you would do to sheep actually, around the ears, it keeps the bugs out so you can keep your sheep alive. But in a biblical context, it's the process of anointing someone right? So therefore, this position, so it says, The Spirit of the Lord comes powerfully upon him from that day on. So Samuel, Samuel just goes back to Rome, it goes back to where he was, and we hit the cutscene. Now, the Spirit of the Lord had left Saul. And he sends a tormenting spirit that fills in with depression and fear, quick, sidebar, Holy Spirit, or it's there's another place for reading the Holy Spirit and like demons cannot have fellowship, right? So that's the holy spirit leaves them and that's why he has this tormenting spirit here. So the suggestion is made. What's going to help you with this? So servants are like, Oh, no, maybe if we find someone who can play the harp that'll calm you down. Okay, good. Now we have an app for that. So here they have to get they have to get Jesse right. So they have to get David to come. So that's a suggestion. He's a talented harpist. Fine. So there's this back and forth of messengers between his dad Jesse like, can you come? Yes, he can come. And so what happens is, Saul loves David very much it works. It calms him down, loves him very much and just pay attention to that. Remember that they have a relationship here, right? So he becomes his armor bearer, and he's his harvest so he serves salt. Another correspondence remember this rich se, right. Can David staying you know? Yes, he can stay fine. So now, you get to the David Goliath scene. So let me just give you the background here. So what's going on is the Philistines. So it's like this valley of Isla. So just imagine two armies camped on either side, right of this like Valley. And you have Goliath, this champion coming out to the buildings. And basically, what he's doing is he's taunting them, and challenging them to a one on one, right? So if anyone can beat me, fine, you guys have all won, if anyway, so that's basically like the challenge is taunting every day. Four days are going by. In the meantime, you have David going back and forth to the camps. He's taking care of the sheep. He's going to the army camp and his brothers have they're fighting on the front lines. And so one day, Jesse sends him with some bread, some grain and like 10 Cheese wheels for the captain, right? So sends him with the supplies. And David, here's what's going on. Like, there's this talk, wait, Saul says, Whoever can defeat the Philistine, he's going to give his daughter and marriage right make them wealthy, like his dad never has to pay taxes again. So it's a good setup. David hears it and he begins like, questioning, like, you know, just asking too many people and his older brother older brother live gets mad at him like, what do you keep asking this for? You know, like your opportunities is the point. And then here we are for Samuel 1731. Then David's question was reported to King Saul and the king sent for him. Don't worry about this Philistine, David told Saul, I'll go fight him. Totally ridiculous. All replied, there's no way you can fight this Philistine possibly when you're only a boy, and he's been a man of war since his youth. But David persisted. I've been taking care of my father's sheep and goats. He said, when a lion or a bear comes to steal a lamb from the flock, I go after it with a club and rescue the lamb from its mouth. If the animal turns on me, I catch it by the join Club. It's enough. I've done this to both lions and bears, and I'll do it to this pig and Philistine to for he has defied the armies of the living God, the Lord who rescued me from the claws of the lion, and the bear will rescue me from this Philistine. So I'll finally consented. Go ahead, you said, and may the Lord be with you. So again, God doesn't see things the way we see them, right? So it's unlikely. So now you have the scene. Again, remember, David and Saul are talking they know one another, tries on his armor. Now make a little note here about so remember, I said he's a head taller than everyone else. Alright. Just quick nerd note. If you've been with us for a while, you know this, if you haven't, if you go back to the oldest copies of the Old Testament that we are in possession of, and the Bible of the early church, it says that Goliath is six foot nine is not nine feet tall. So he adds something to the story. Here you have Saul, who's what a head taller than everyone else, I'm going to say maybe nine inches. So let's say six feet tall. He's the same height as Goliath. So it paints a picture of Saul, right? Like, he may be a bit of a coward. Because we do see, you know, the king wouldn't do that. Yeah, David does, right. So and kings do that they're supposed to be leading. So just a little bit of a scene here. So what happens is, and it also adds to this because David tries on his armor, and it's like, clunky he can't move well in it but also now if you're thinking if this guy's really tall, and this may be smaller guys trying on the armor, it doesn't work. So what does David do? Okay, I'm going to get five smooth stones from the wadi or river right from the stream because five smooth stones he's only decided to shepherd staff a slingshot, essentially. And these stones right? And now there's an exchange between him and Goliath. Goliath is upset like, you come at me like my dog that you come at me with a stick you know, like doesn't even have a sword because Goliath comes out and he has this big old Weaver's being sword, there's armor bearer, you know, he's ready to go. David's just like what's really you're going to do this to me, smaller guy. So they go back and forth a bit of a taunt like you come with sword and spear and javelin. But I in the name of the Lord of Heaven's Armies, the God of the armies of Israel, right. So I'll give you dead bodies to the birds in the wild animals and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel. So after this exchange, David rush ism, takes one of the stones out of the bag, boom, hits him in the forehead falls down. And a lot of people don't remember this part. But it's kind of awesome. He takes his own sword and cuts off his head, just like in the other time, he said he was going to do that. And that's it. So now, here is where people usually stop. That's it right? That's what we know about David and when we're going to hop over to the Bathsheba thing, right? You know that about David, there's a couple of things about David that's kind of where you are, but there's a lot in between. And so here's the problem when we stop. So when we stop what you typically hear in church nowadays, is something like your David Right. So that's what here's how we're going to frame it like you're David Right? And then there's a Goliath in your lives. Perhaps a real giant I don't know. But usually not right. So like this. Goliath is just something you know, it's your boss. It's up. Let's go. Like whatever it is that you're Goliath, right? And so, Lord is going to empower you to stand up to him and it goes on and on like that, right? Well, we're going to do real quick, it's not going to be real quick, as quick as I can, I'm going to overview like the David accounts for you. So I'm going to take like, you know, two books of the Bible, and I'm going to kind of just put them together for you highlighting all the parts. So I'm not going to go over every detail. But here's, here's a valuable lesson we learned. We learned that when just like we would sit down and watch a movie, right? You kind of get the point. But that's not what we do. Is it right? We look at like little tiny snippets and go, ah, you know, here's the conclusion. Wrong, like, you got the wrong conclusion. And you'll see in this case, people totally missed the point. So let's just do an overview and look at David where David's really all about here. All right, so a couple of things. I'll try to make this fast. But it's very interesting if in your Bible after this account, all of a sudden, there's this really weird account that I've heard people try to explain, and they never get it right. Where saw like, it all happens, right. And then so on Abner's general there. And he's like, kind of confused. They're like, Who is that?
What, you know, there's like, I don't know, well, what's his father's name? Right. So then he comes up and figures out who it is, right? Why would solve the asking who that was, who killed Goliath? And what his dad's name is when he just had correspondence for them. That's weird, then. And people say, Oh, well, he was in the distance wrong, read your Bible he was but then come up, and they have a face to face conversation. And it's the same thing he has to kind of introduce himself. Quick nerd note. That part is not in the Bible of the early church. Somehow it got added in there. And if you're having an awesome Bible, it'll say that in the footnotes, you don't like that in the footnotes. So problems. So it's not in the oldest copies that we have. It's just kind of something that got thrown in there. So anyway, what's happening now you can imagine, like a victory parade after this victory, right? So they're, they're chasing the Philistines around they win. And so you have these women in the victory parade, and they're singing this chant that will come up again, essentially, it's like, oh, yeah, Saul killed his 1000s. But David killed his 10 1000s. And now this sparks Saul's anger. So Saul starts to get real angry with the help of this tormenting spirit. So David's move is like spearing people. He throws a spirit, David, right. He's going to do that to his son, too, which is kind of messed up this tormenting spirit cosmodrome is trying to kill David. Then just a quick note, this is actually some twisted scripture here, David and Jonathan, they develop a really, really good bond. They're just like, BFFs, right. So if we can understand that, that's really all it is. People today with a different agenda, and not in this context at all. We'll make it about David and Jonathan being with one another. And it's just totally unnecessary, totally out of context, not understanding the culture. And I will add, even if David did that, it wouldn't be one of the worst things he did. He did a lot of bad stuff. We're not supposed to follow his examples. Hello, you know, so, again, he didn't say, you know, but you're laughing but you know what I mean, you, you'll see, so, right. So whatever way you want to take it, no, no, he's not the ultimate example. That's going to be one of the big points. So anyway, just so you know, it's really twisted scripture worth mentioning. So now, the issue here is a bride for David. Right. So what was the promise? You know, it was a private So Saul is going to give the daughter Mira, that's his oldest daughter. You know, he's going to get his whole reward here. But David at first is really humble, right? It's like, who am I? You know? I'm going to shepherd boy. Right? So no, you kind of refuse it. Meantime mayor gets married off and then Michael, his other daughter there. falls in love with David. Okay, so I was like, I can get rid of this guy. Maybe I don't have to spear him. I'll send him on like an impossible task. You know what? You can marry Michael if you really want to work for it. Fine. So Michael, the female version of the name Michael and so there's no more confusion. She's. So it is a female version of MIKO there. So what do you what are you going to do right? I'm going to need 100 Philistine for skins. That's kind of gross. Right. So, you know, I've imagined the logistics of this. It's not pretty rational. Anyway, so what is David doing that? Then he's going to get Saul's daughter. Oh, he brings 200 Philistine foreskins overachiever. That's all I'm going to say about that. There we go. So Solid still after like, that didn't work. So he's trying to spear everybody. He's after David. And so Jonathan helps David his wife Michael actually helps David and it's kind of funny. It makes me laugh, because they come to get them and she says sick, but he's like she makes. So I can't like, okay, maybe you were that kid I was a really bad kid growing up. So I remember making like a pillow me so I could sneak out. That's what kind of happens right? So she takes an idol like, I always laugh things that idol puts it in the bed and then like some girl, she's better than I was because she gets hair for David today some like goat, some wool, and like puts it on the top there. I'm like, pretty good. That's a good pillow. David. Right. So and like though she's sleeping sick, so they go away, but you know, so I was like, kill him anyway. But it gives him the chance to get away. So now he's running, he's running for help. And this isn't one that like nobody pays attention to. It's kind of funny because Jesus references it and people really don't get this one. So he's on the run, right? And he runs into the priest Ahimelech. And he has been with him. So basically, what's happening is a small band of like misfits that are following him around. And he's he says he needs food for them. So you're not supposed to eat and make it as simple as I can. He's not supposed to eat like the shoulder of the holy bread. So thanks, holy bread just for the priest. And he is supposed to eat it. But somehow David convinces him because you know, my men haven't slept with any women. They're clean so they can have the bread. So somehow that logic works. And this is what Jesus references. Don't you know, the time of Abiathar, the high priest when David ate the bread he wasn't supposed to eat, and it's in response to the disciples touching the grain on the Sabbath or so anyway, real quick. So that's what he's referencing, but it's not Abiathar. It's a Himalayan and you'll learn why in a minute. So anyway, also, David asks for a weapon, and he lies to a hemlock. He tells him that Saul sent him on an errand and he was in such a rush, he didn't take any armor, said no experience warrior ever. So he's lying. So you got to remember that he deceives a priest is lying to a priest, this is really bad, and it gets worse. So there's the sort of Goliath there's nothing like it's not David has the sword of Goliath at this point. So now he continues to flee. And David's thought process is I'm going to go into enemy territory. So if I go into Philistine territory, Saul is not going to be able to get me right. He has to fight through the Philistines together. So he goes, it's a good idea at first goes there, this guy aka Gath Akin. And so he goes, zoom, and all of a sudden, like his people are there going? Isn't this the guy like everyone was singing about like Saul killed 1000s and David killed his 10 1000s. And to David's like, roll, you know, like, I just went into enemy territory, and I probably didn't think this through. So what does David do? He starts acting crazy. So as he starts letting spittle Come down his beard and scratching doors, totally read it. This the Bible is awesomely entertaining.
And I can like read it to you if you want to put that out there. Don't put that out there.
So anyway, he pretends to be crazy. He deceives King agar she's being deceitful. Right? So he gets away with that he's the cave a Golem. We might have heard of that. 400 man now, because he lied another cutscene Saul finds out that Ahimelech help David. When he was helping him there was this guy Duhig II to my watching. And so he reports it to salt. So I was like, kill the whole priests like kill him. But his guard his guys won't do it. They know how horribly sinful that is? Right? So do like Dina might he does it? At 85 Priests, their women, their children, all their lives. Everything is killed. Because David lied to a hemlock. That's why we're getting like the backstory. Nobody's telling by David. So David now is in the wilderness. He has like 600 Men, Saul has 300. And once you do is you get these scenes of Saul chasing him around a lot. He spare salt twice, first time in a cave, a different cave by this like she pulled in the road. And Saul's in there relieving himself. And so David's also in that cave, he doesn't know it. So there's a note. And so he's always encouraged each time like Killam. And David says about the same thing each time. It's not up to me to kill the Lord's anointed, right? So David sneaks up on him and cuts off like a piece of his rope. And he waits for Saul to go a distance away from the cave, you know, basically announces that he could have done it. And then you get this banter between them. That's almost the same in both accounts where David's like Why are you chasing around this dead dog or a flee like me, right? And then saw kind of repents for a minute, right? So he's like, oh, sorry, I shouldn't have done that and also realizes you could have killed me. So that happens. Now you get a pretty interesting account. So again, they're like kind of wandering around. They're in the wilderness and all this. And so there's this guy, navel, and he's really wealthy and sheep sharing time and he has all kinds The provisions that they can use that David has men can use. So he sends some people out to get it and knave all just decides to insult David like it basically calling him a runaway slave. Right. So they report it to David and David's response is get your swords, you know, so he's going to go kill me while he's like immediately. In meantime, his wife, Abigail is like, you know, smarter than him. And so she gets some provisions goes to David and apologizes. David's like thanks because I was about to kill him. You saved me from that. She goes back to her husband. He's like partying or whatever. So she has to wait to the next morning tells him what happened. And the guy has like, basically, I would translate it as a stroke because like his heart, when did he has like a stroke, but he's still alive. So it's not like a heart attack, because so he's like, still alive, but he's probably like in some type of coma. And it takes like 10 Days to Die. He dies. So Abigail's husband dies. And what is David do? marries her. Right? So nice guy gives this guy a heart attack, and then marries his wife. Great plan. So now you have David in Gath. And there's this quick thing in there where on? Oh, he goes back to King acres, it somehow works out. And acres gives him a town called Ziklag. And now what you have is kind of in their salt downfall. So really starts to go downhill. He's consulting a medium Samuel comes up and all this stuff, but basically you're going to die. And so he has battled with the Philistines, and he's going to get killed him and his son, Jonathan, they die. So that's what you have going on here. But before the battle, what's happening is David's try. It's interesting, David's trying to go to the battle on the Philistine side, which sounds really weird. And so you really don't know whether it's David's intention to fight with the Philistines or to turn on them in the middle of the battle. They get worried about it. And so they reject David, but in the meantime, his tone of Ziklag gets sacked, gets attacked. And so yes, go back and get everybody back. He does. It's all fine, in case you're wondering. So. So now what you're going to do is you're going to kind of hop into Second Samuel in First Chronicles 10, David hears about the death of Saul, the guy who announces it to him makes a big mistake, because maybe we don't really know if he's telling the truth or not. But the way he paints it, like Saul is dying. And he saw him and finished them off. And then David's like, wait, you killed the Lord's anointed, and he kills that guy. So that's really what you have going on. Now you get these power struggles, right? Because you had King Saul. And it's an Ishbosheth. It's like, great. Now I'm king. That's a natural thing because my dad was king. But David's King, right? So you begin to have like them warring. It's like almost like their first little civil war going on here. Israel. So it's before Israel and Judah splits of the nation of Israel, there. And so now it's splitting a little Judas gone with David is both shots. And there's power struggles between Joab and Abner and his generals and things like that job ends up killing Abner and later a mesa. But eventually things shore up a bit. David captures Jerusalem was a jay Bruce captures Jerusalem and He's establishing his kingship and the city's associate Saul's sons general leaves him and David starts to collect more and more power here. So what happens here is, there's the moving of the ark, there's going to happen twice. So the first time David doesn't do it the right way. There's upon making the stories, right? You just doesn't do it the right way doesn't consult the priests. He doesn't do it the way he should be doing. And so you probably remember, right? Like, you have Amazon, Ohio, they're carrying the ark. And so as a reaches out to grab the ark, and they struck dead for touching the ark, right? That kind of thing. And so David gets really upset, and he gives up on that plan the first time, then, it'll say that David builds a bunch of buildings. He also prepares a place for the Ark and sets up a special tent. Then he commanded no one but the Levites are to do this. And now he starts consulting with the spiritual people, right, the priests and things of how to do this. And basically it stated because the Levites didn't do it the first time he didn't do it the right way. That's why that's a pure as a burst out against Uzza. So now he does it properly. So it gets it across. And kind of another funny scene. He's going to do some of that. And he's like, dancing around. He's worshipping like crazy. No, he's not naked, because it tells us he's wearing a linen, like kind of linen. ephod. So if anyone's ever said, that's not true, but he's right. Michael has contempt for him. It says like, he might be going crazy, right? dancing around in his underwear. And so she states as much and they have a little bit of a spat. They have an argument about it. But what it says about Michael for doing this is that she had no child like she was childless. And so you're left with two choices. One, David didn't sleep with her anymore because he doesn't make a comment about the other women who will regard him or she's just struck barren because of, you know, calling David I like that. Anyway, now we get to a scene where David wants to build a temple. So okay, got city we have Jerusalem we're going to build a temple for God. This is great. He's all excited. And he has this conversation with Nathan the prophet about the first Nathan's. Like, yeah, go for it. But then the Lord talks to Nathan says, Nope, not going to do it. And here's where we get the Davidic Covenant, this is where this happens. No, you're not going to build the temple, your son will, but then your descendants are going to flourish. And so if you know the Bible, well, Jesus, right, so that that's going to point to Jesus's how that connects to that covenant. That's what's important about Jesus. What's going to happen through Solomon, and get there in a minute, a lot of what you see here to a lot of people quit. There's a lot of summaries about David's soldiers and different battles and things like that. Then you get to the David and Bathsheba account, I'll just give you a couple extra details you may or may not know or have considered. So the backdrop for this is really important. When we look at David. They're going against the city of Robert right. So they're going against the city and it lets us know, this is usually the time when kings go out to war. But what's David doing? He's lounging. Right. So he's like, basically, like, let's say on upper roof, and he's spying on this beautiful woman. Right? Right. So but where should he be? Fighting right? Should not be doing this. Right? So this is what happens to you guys when you have too much free time on your hands. Okay, so go to work. So don't retire.
So I won't go any further on that topic. So anyway, so you know about the fairy house with Bathsheba right? You might know that. And now you need to consider though her husband Uriah is at war, where David should be, she gets pregnant. Okay, what do we do? Well, deceit, more deceit. So we're going to get your IA to come back. And he tries a couple times to trick him into like getting him drunk this and that. But now gravity with that in mind, context in mind to what your eyes says, like, you know, how can I do this? And how can I sleep in my wife when basically my brothers are out there at war? Take a hit David. Right. You know, so it adds a little gravity to it, right? better man than David. So what is David do to this better man than he? Well, he sends them out to battle and make sure that a mistake is weight made form and it goes too close to like a city walls. So he gets killed. Right? Awesome. So now he's a murderer, right? So an adult or a murderer. And now there's a price to be paid for this. There are consequences that baby dies, and then we get juvenile, Solomon and Solomon there. But in the meantime, Nathan's rebuke brings forth a prophecy which we'll set up what will happen. This time on your family will live by the sword because you have despised me by taking your eyes wife to be erode. This is what the Lord says, because of what you've done. I will cause your own household to rebel against you. I will give your lives to another man before your very eyes, and you will go to bed with them in public view. You did it secretly. But I'll make this happen to you openly inside of all Israel. Ouch. So now things start to fall apart begins with the rape of his daughter Tamar. So his eldest son Amnon, rapes his daughter gets a half sister to him, but still messed up. rapes her. Absalom another son, full brother gets so mad he kills and on and on escapes. And on gets our app. Sorry, absolutely. Amazon's dead. Sorry. It says he's good. But Absalom gets reconciled. But here's what Absalom does. He stages a rebellion against David. And so what eventually happens is he takes over Jerusalem, David voluntarily leaves it so it doesn't get destroyed. And what does Absalom do? sleeps with David concubines and open view. prophecy comes true, but it's worse. It's his son, your son's going to sleep with essentially your wives. So then what happens is, so they have to kind of conquer Jerusalem again to get the absolute gets killed by Joab is general. And so it's really mixed blessing for David Right. So he's mourning because yay, you've taken over the city, but at the expense of your son. Get his son killed. Right. So this is terrible. Really, really tragic life. Right? So you don't want to be David really? More stories about battles, and then another sin. David takes a census. What's the big deal? Well, in this particular context, it's David saying, Look at what I did, was basically he's not really now honoring the Lord the way you should and it's so bad that Joab the wicked general recognizes this. He's like, I don't really want to do this, David, but he does it anyway. And for that sin 70,000 People die. David's pride, get 70,000 people killed. So I'm going to think about so now, David. Remember, he's been told about Solomon. Now David makes preparations for the temple and you get a lot of this the preparations of different things. But if we have the first Chronicles, we'll get a detail that isn't over there. First Chronicles 26 Then David sent for his son Solomon instructed him to build a temple for the Lord, the God of Israel, my son, I wanted to build a temple to honor the name of the Lord, my God, David told them but the Lord said to me, you have killed many men in the battles you've fought. And since you have shed so much blood in my sight, you will not be the one to build a temple to honor my name. But you have a son who will be a man of peace, I will give him peace with his enemies and all the surrounding lands. His name will be Solomon and I will give peace and quiet to Israel during his reign. He is the one who will build the temple to honor my name, he will be my son and I will be his father and I will secure the throne of his kingdom over Israel forever. We also need to keep reading again, just a little more. First Chronicles 22. David rose to his feet and said, my brothers and people, it was my desire to build a temple where the Ark of the Lord's covenant God's footstool could rest permanently. I made the necessary preparations for building it. But God said to me, You must not build the temple to honor my name for you are a warrior and have shed much blood. So I may have missed it. So one of the things when he's deceiving Achish, the second time I tell you guys about the raiding parties. No. So when he goes to live around acres, what he's doing is he's going on these raiding parties. And he's killing let's just say acres, just people, he's killing the Philistine people. He just got it, but he doesn't want acreage to find out because that's his host think about it. So he makes sure that anyone who could tell the stories dead he's alright sank sanction battles of the Lord. No, he's just going a plundering. That's what he's doing. He's going around. And then though it says specifically the women, the women who could tell his story, he's killing them. He's murdering innocent people. So that's what he did in there. We think that was a second to see if I missed it. So this is why so if he's a sanction battle, well, how could the Lord punish him? No, you've shed too much blood. You murdered a lot of people. Not great, right? So if we go into first Kings, you get him with a couple chats David and his old age, Abba shag the shoot of my woman keeps them warm, although it says they don't do anything in bed together. But David's tragedy continues at an Asia who he didn't discipline at anytime. He begins the stage rebellion against Solomon like everybody knows Solomon supposed to be the king now at a Niger's doing it. And then what happens is, David on his deathbed, he really doesn't give this nice like forgiving deathbed speech, right? So he's talking about Jerry's warning about Joab. And this guy, shimmy, who cursed him, right? Basically prepared deaths for them, like David already forgiven them right now, better that you get them killed, like I couldn't do it in my time. But you can Solomon, like, kill them. And that's really what's going on. And so Solomon will secure his empire, he kills out and it kills Joab. And then Jimmy gets himself killed, to be fair. But anyway, it's really sad. And this is how David's life ends in tragedy, unforgiveness. Like he's been forgiven by the Lord so much. You think he'd be like? Yeah, yeah, hey, like, just leave him alone. As bad as everything I've done. No, kill him. Solomon, he orders murder for two more people. Not done yet. Crazy. And the tragedy that was prophesied there, Nathan just continues to happen over and over and over again. So after hearing the rest of David's story, like if you've ever heard the David goddess story and got pumped up, but you're the rest of David's account, he still want to be David. I don't know, we see he did some great things as a kid, not taking anything away from that. But he also did a lot of very bad things that you don't hear a lot about. And one of them is The stated reason he can't build the Lord's temple. Just think about that for a second it goes to someone else. Now we hear about David. So a question arises for those of you who have read your Bible. So then why does it say that he's a man after God's own heart? So let's look at it. So if we go back, this is Samuel talking to Saul. First Samuel 1313, a fuller Samuel, explain. If not kept the command of the Lord that God gave you. Had you kept it, the Lord would have established your kingdom over Israel forever. But now your kingdom must end. The Lord has sought out a man after his own heart. And we know that's David. The Lord has already appointed him to be the leaders people because you have not kept the Lord's command. And if we have to Paul he's giving a speech. Paul an axis x 1321. Then the people begged for a king so I told you guys about this. Then God gave him them salt son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin arraign for 40 years, but God removed salt and replaced them with David, a man about whom God said I have found Dave Bit son of Jesse, a man after my own heart, he will do everything I want him to do. operative words after God's own heart, right, so it's a couple of ways you can think about that. David was a man after God's own heart because he demonstrated his faith and was committed to following the Lord the best he could kind of, yes, his faith was tested many times. But what's in this story is, every time he sinning, what is he doing, he's repenting, or he's seeking the Lord's forgiveness, each time with each one of these mistakes. So he may have been a man after God's own heart, but we need to remember something. David was not God. I'll tell you who is in a minute. But what I'm going to do is just kind of let let's just kind of indulge this, let's, let's just go down that path. Right. So let's say we want to be David. Right. So we'll just continue on with that. That teaching, right. So we'll go back to The David and Goliath each and do it wrong for a minute, right? But I'll point out some problems with this. So the first thing again, man after God's own heart, right? David repents. All right?
Meaning he'll turn from the sin, seek the Lord's forgiveness, right? Learning, David that he accepts the punishment. He accepts the punishment each time, he's accepting of the punishment. So if you read David's accounts, notice that every time he gets dealt some terrible punishments, and he doesn't complain about it, he's like, Okay, I got it. Then the other thing he accepts, he's very when he hears this, right, that, that he's, you look into the covenant, you can see, like, it's going to go to Solomon, he's like, Thank You, Lord, you know that my line might go on forever. A lot of us might be like, Hey, you're giving what should have been mine to somebody else. He doesn't deserve it. David doesn't do that. So being a David would require being fully repentant, right, accepting responsibility for your actions, and accepting punishments. That's the number one, most people are not going to be like, David, if you're a pastor like me, it is very rare, very rare to have anyone come into my office or approach me. And like, say something like, you know, talking about somebody else, right? You know, and then accepting their partners, but the biggest ones, like the marriage counseling, right, so they'll come in, but before the marriage counseling, I'm going to be like, listen, listen, I want you each instead of complaining about the other person to come in with something that you might have done wrong and talk about that. They can't. They either don't come up with that, because they're never wrong. Or when they do they say it. I'm sorry. And there's always one word after I wait for it. But and I'm like, it's over, leave, get out. Because you don't mean it. Nothing. You said before that now matters, but is a word that we use to get to everything we really mean. That's why most of people will not be David. It's very rare to have anyone sit in and be like, I was just totally wrong. Like, it couldn't have been wrong. Or, you know, and so whatever my punishment is, totally accept that. We're good. Can we pray, you know, like, never happens. That's, that's what should so I'm just letting you all know if you want to do that, that's okay. Anyway, so done venting. Here's another problem, right? So. So people are all praying, like, I'm this, David. I'm going to fight the Goliath in my lives. So I'm laughing because this is really funny. But they're not willing to put in the work that David, did. I want to frame this out for you. Right. So just a quick, quick, quick disclaimer, right? So sorry, my technology's not being great. So, a disclaimer for you. Let's just get some theology. Right. And I want you to, okay, yes, we are saved by grace, not by works, right. We cannot boast Ephesians two, that is true. There's no but I'm not saying it. But and you should keep reading right? So if agents to eight, read nine and 10 We are created a new in Christ Jesus for doing good works that God prepared beforehand. What you do says more about what you believe that anything you say, so God works for us, but God also works with us. Right? So that's the role of the church and the ministries and different things like that. Of course, God could do all of it himself, right? Pray hard enough. Boom, the whole potluck would appear because it likes it that Pastor Jean makes Stromboli okay. I'm not going to talk about that anymore. But you know what I mean? So it's but it's a little of both when we're thinking of it, right? So just to know that but let's just think about David I'm going to throw myself under the bus. OS with all the different things that I've done like, and maybe I can see David in a way that it's harder for some people to see. And it's for a few reasons, right. So let's think about David and what his like resume looks like. So harvest, right, but he's really, really good or the liar who's really good. Think about it, right? He wrote at least half of the songs. Pretty good. That's a pretty good song catalog. If you're asking me right, you know what I mean? Like, he's got a pretty good collection of hit songs, if you're asked me. So he's a hit songwriter. And he's also so good that a king got him to play. Okay. Now, if you know anything about me, I was a musician. I guitar was my main instrument. Now he's in a band, and we wrote lots of songs, and we recorded we play and all this other stuff. But I didn't have like 74 hit songs, right? That God already and no king or anybody like that ever asked me to play guitar for them, especially when they're like demon possessed. But anyway, so anyway, right. So he was really good at that. So he's just a musician. He's amazing. He's like, 10 million times better than meat. Not hard to do. But anyway, still, but then, right? He's a shepherd. Now, you may or may not know this, but my parents made the mistake of moving me to a farm when I was in my teenage years as a kid from suburbia. Not cool. But anyway, I won't vent about that. But I took care of sheep gross, and so cared like horses and I bailed hay. I thought baling hay was the worst chore. And so I thought, I read about David and realized I have not killed a lion or a bear. Nope. Like, I can't complain anymore. Pick up those hay bales even though you're allergic, right? So not a baby was terrible. Not a big deal. Right? So I know a little bit about that kind of work. And I never did that. David's pretty amazing. Right? So then he's also a warrior. Now. You know, me too. I did martial arts for a long time. Right? So it took me 10 years to get a black belt sounds like a long time. I don't know. Maybe I was bad at it. But anyway, David, like I never killed anybody with a sword. I got to play around with swords, but I never killed people the sword. David would totally kill me. Right? So you just destroy me. Like I'm like, Okay, let's do some jujitsu. Just like cut my head off. You know, crazy. So David's amazing. Like, he's 10 times a martial artist. I can imagine being he's a king. I'm in charge of like, 150 to 200 people, not like hundreds of 1000s of people. I don't know what that's like. It's a David's pretty amazing. And he's beautiful. Right? So I know that I'm not. It's okay. Doesn't need to be needy. Beautiful, right? So anyway, just stop. Anyway, she's amazing, right? He's like, Oh, like Brad Pitt and all Brad Pitt's movies or something like that. I don't know, whatever you like, but he's incredible. So but what we get though, for real, like when I see are these like melodramatic social media versions of people trying to be David. It's really funny. Like, No way, dude. Like, you're not even close. Right? So people get all riled up on a Sunday, right about defeating the giant. You're like, David, you're going to do it. And then they get to work on Monday. And they don't even have the guts to ask their boss for some time off for Bible study. Like, can I leave work early for like Bible study? No, they're afraid to do that. You know, it's like, you're not David. There's just no way. It's not even close. Right? So no, David was no slouch. He put in the work. And that's one of the first big problems here was saying we're David. It's ridiculous. It's totally unrealistic. You're not David. All right. So big problem with our society today. They want to put on work. But now let's look at the story. Right, like so when we look to the full council of God's word, we look to what the Bible says we don't stop. Right. That second soundly, First Kings. We don't stop there. We do a crazy thing. crazy idea. We keep reading our Bibles to the end, before making any concrete conclusions. Maybe read it a few times, right? Because a big book will teaches us something. David is an example of no matter how great we think we are, or how great the world says we are. We all need Jesus. Another thing he's no hero compared to Christ. That's the other big problem. Right? So the biggest problem when we emulate David, and we stop there, right? We do. It takes the focus off Christ, doesn't it? We make David the hero and try to be like him, then what are we doing? We're trying to be the hero of the story. That's not good, that is sinful, and that is prideful. Not a good thing. And it's a cultural trap, which is counter to Christianity. We have to realize that our culture in which we live is completely counter to true Christianity. And the Bible tells us that it shows us what David did. Did it work? No. And then it shows us what Jesus did, which is the total and complete opposite. Did it work? Yes, please say yes to that. It's really important. Yes, right? It worked. Right? So think about it. Right. So when we desire to be like David, what do we do? We want to conquer by self sufficiency and violence. That wasn't in Jesus's playbook at all. No. Instead, what should we what are we told the New Testament to conquer through love, peace, submission. It says that, so we shouldn't desire to be like someone who sins, we should desire to be like the one who had no sin. None of us can be Jesus. But the Bible clear like First Peter comes to mind Philippians come to mind. Jesus is our example. comes up over and over and over, he is your example. And you are to be like him. That tells us that we are to strive to be like, Jesus. Right? And what's kind of funny, here's the irony. Remember the beginning of David's story, don't judge by appearance.
All right. People don't see things the way the Lord sees them. I like society, I shouldn't. But you know what I'm saying? Like the world, our culture doesn't see things the way the Lord sees it. It's very different to truth. So, remember, the kingship doesn't go to a person, you'd expect them, right. So you never saw that's what the world wanted? Then it got David. But here's the thing. David is just a prefigure a descendant of Christ. So it's a foreshadowing of what was going to happen because when we look at Jesus's story, we see something that's like totally crazy, and it's crazy to them. And it's a we wait a minute, instead of pridefully, sacrificing others for himself. Jesus humbly sacrificed himself for others. It's the opposite. And the Bible tells us is First Corinthians going to, it's foolishness to the world. So Paul frames it. First crazy what your God got killed, how does God get killed? Total foolishness. But we mustn't make the same mistake today, in being foolish, said setting our sights on a David and missing the mark playing the short game. Because that's just the thing of the world. We're supposed to be like Jesus. So one of the best commentaries on the Old Testament I can think of is Hebrews Evers quotes, the Old Testament a lot, and it gives us a lot more insight into it. So really cool. If you know these stories to read Hebrews like, yes, but you get to this one chapter, chapter 11. And it drives me nuts, like, the bold headings in your Bible, and the numbers were not there. That's, that's not the word of God. Because the headings above like, each section will change. And God's Word does not. But sometimes it'll say something like heroes of the face. And I'm like, Well, you know what I mean? And then chapter 11, will go through all the heroes of the faith, but that's not what the Bible says they are. Right? So people have faith and in their David's mentioned, David's mentioned in there, and so I just want you to keep reading, which is what people don't do. No chapter breaks in the original. So I'm just going to go straight through and I want you. So if you thought that those were heroes of the faith, here you go. So John's going to ruin your preconceived notions about the Bible, Hebrews 1139, all these people, so all the people of faith, all these people had a good reputation because of their faith. Yet, none of them received all that God promised for God and had something better in mind for us so that we would not read they would not reach perfection without us keep reading, because no chapter break. Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God is set before us see, we do something. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion, who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy of waiting him, he endured the cross disregarding its shame. Now you have seated in the place of honor besides God's throne, God had something better than David in mind. Jesus, the true champion, the true author and perfecter of our faith. Jesus has already defeated the gulyas in our lives. That's it. We set our sights on Jesus, not David, you know, he's the first do a lot of great things. But we're not to set our sights. That's not what the Bible teaches. They talk about all these people. We're going to call them heroes of the faith. And then ultimately, that's great, but they're something better. Jesus. That's what the word of God teaches. Don't stop it, David. No, no, no, no, no. If they did rattle off a whole bunch of people in the Old Testament, and they're like, great, better, Jesus is better. Jesus gives us no bad examples. Jesus flips the script. And we have to keep reading. We can't just get stuck in this one time in place before Jesus has come in the flesh. And Dawn has finished work for us on the cross. That's our fulfillment. That's our definition of everything that happens. We need to keep reading the story. And when we do, we see that our Lord is someone who is not flawed like David, he won't let us down like David. He won't make us feel ashamed or embarrassed like David or any of the other kings or rulers of this world that so many look to for help. Jesus is the only one we should be looking to for help. That is it. The Bible tells us he is with our sin. Instead of coming as some kind of warrior king, the people rejected him for this reason you're not David Son of David. Now why when David speaking by the Spirit called the Messiah as Lord Jesus is Lord over everyone. Yeah, humbled Himself even though he existed as God by being obedient to the point of death, even to death on a cross. We must remember Jesus is King of all kings and Lord of all lords Amen.
